Ahmad Zaharin Aris



Professor Dr. Ahmad Zaharin Aris, CEnv, MRSC, FASc has conducted pioneering work on the establishment and development of hydrochemistry and environmental forensics studies in Malaysia where some of his works have been used to set up national and international guidelines and policies on environmental issues. He has instituted various impressive and successful programs including the establishment of comprehensive chemical databases for fingerprinting and a hub for training and technological transfer in environmental forensics. He is one of the top researchers in environmental science in Malaysia, and a globally recognized scientist and academia in his field of expertise. This has led him to be accorded with Top Research Scientist Malaysia award in 2019 and one of the finalists for Zayed International Prize (Young Scientists Award for Environmental Sustainability). He was also awarded with a prestigious award by Universiti Putra Malaysia with Young Scientist Award for 2013 and Vice Chancellor Fellowship Award and nominated for TWAS Earth Sciences Prize 2015. Known to be one of the youngest SEARCA (Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture) Professorial Chair grantees, Ahmad Zaharin Aris is also the finalist (1st Runner Up) for 2016 National Young Scientist Award by Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Malaysia. He received The Golden Globe Tigers Award 2017 – Best Professor in Environmental Studies in April 2017.Recently he is being recognized as World Top 2% scientist (subject wise) and was elected as a Fellow of Academy of Sciences Malaysia (FASc - ASM) -  for his outstanding achievement and contribution and regarded as being of exceptional merit and distinction. He became the youngest fellow elected in the history of ASM. He is also a national representative for APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education (“ASPIRE”) and many other local and international awards. He is an Associate Editor for a few top tier journals, including Nature Scientific Report and Environmental Geochemistry and Health. He was appointed as a professor at the age of 33 and currently being the senior professor specializing in the fields of Hydrochemistry, Geochemistry, Environmental Chemistry and Analysis and Environmental Forensics and now holds a senior professor rank at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Currently, he is the Director at International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences at UPM. Prior to the present appointment, he was the Dean, Deputy Director, Deputy Dean as well as the Head of the Environmental Forensics Research Centre at UPM. He also actively involved as a member of various committees such as, Panel for Postdoctoral Scholarship Selection Committee for Human Life Advancement Foundation (HLAF), National Panel of Research Assessment for Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS, TRGS and SATREPS), Science Fund, Research University Grant Scheme (RUGS), South African Medical Research Council, EU Fund, RCUK - UK, National Research and Development Agency - Chile, Scientific Advisor - Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia (SF) and many more. 
 

He published hundreds of academic writings related to his field in refereed reputable international journals, books and chapters in books as well as conference papers. His papers are also used as references for policy papers. Over 60% of his published SCI papers are in Q1 and Q2 tiers. Some of his papers have been ranked as the most downloaded papers and received many citations within a short period of time. Furthermore, Elsevier’s Scival Spotlight has ranked him third among the global experts under the Distinguished Competency of water quality, sediment and pollution category. He has been featured in several international symposia, professional meetings, news media, and scientific publications. He has trained numerous graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral associates, also visiting scholars locally and internationally in his laboratories.
 

Prof. Dr. Ahmad Zaharin Aris is a senior professor at Faculty of Forestry and Enviroment, Universiti Putra Malaysia and currently the Director of International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He is also an adjunct professor in Faculty of Public Health, Airlangga University, Indonesia and Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, UCSI University, Malaysia.
